A Hard Life is No Excuse for Poor Academics Essay All too often people treat community college students are inferior to students of large universities, even believing that community college students are expected to be less successful. Doing this lowers students’ morale and makes them feel they are unworthy of obtaining gainful employment or even raising their own standards. Though this lowers morale, having a hard life absolutely is no excuse for having excessive absences, rewrites, late papers, plagiarized work, or instructors with low standards who do not require the students to adjust as needed to succeed. As a community college student, the education I am working so hard to gain has been scoffed at and even mocked. Once while having a casual conversation with a co-worker, he asked what college I attend. I told him Spartanburg Community College and he replied â€Å"that isn’t a college, it’s a technical school.† This is a prime example of how students from community colleges are treated as inferior to students of a large university. Students from every institution can suffer hardships and handle their hardships in their own way. I have seen a student who was battling cancer and still holding a B average. On the other hand, there are also students who are just lazy and that lackadaisical attitude shows in their academics. In the article â€Å"The Myth of Inferiority† T. Allen Culpepper stated: At both kinds of institutions, I have also found students who manage to complete a full load of classes successfully while working three jobs, rearing multiple children alone, caring for elderly relatives, and coping with chronic illness or disability, as well as students who take a relatively light load of courses and don’t do much else (except illicit drugs) but still manage to fail all their classes, despite considerable intelligence and ability. (330) What this all comes down to is how hard a student is willing to work on their education. The more students see instructors accepting lackluster work from lackadaisical students, the more the attitude spreads. This is where the instructor comes in. Accepting students’ excuses and excessive absences, allowing rewrites, late papers, and plagiarized work gives the instructor and in turn the institution a bad reputation. With the world literally at everyone’s finger tips, thanks to the internet, no one has the excuse that they weren’t able to at least attempt to complete and submit assignments on time and without plagiarism. Thankfully, there are instructors who don’t believe this is helpful. If asked why he would do well as a community college instructor Culpepper said he would reply, â€Å"I have learned to maintain high standards, expect students to meet them, and do whatever I can to help students meet those expectations.† After which he goes on to explain, â€Å"To lower our standards is to accept the false assumption that students â€Å"here† are inferior to students â€Å"there.†(331) In any college, students may have to adjust to a different form of learning than they are familiar with, but to change a teaching style to appease students is ridiculous. â€Å"In my experience, most students respond favorably to professors who teach well and respond negatively to professors who teach badly, regardless of the teaching methods employed.†(331) Treating someone as though they are beneath you is disrespectful and, if in a position of power, may be considered discriminatory. Though negative words don’t leave visible scars they do leave emotional scars that can turn a once successful student into a struggling, hopeless student. We are all equal and should treat each other as we would like to be treated. The sooner the world as a whole practices this, the sooner bias and discrimination can become a thing of the past. The earliest beginnings of anatomy could be traced back to the Egyptians in 1600 B.C.E., when early examinations of sacrificial victims were taking place. From this time, scholars have found the earliest medical document, known as the Edwin Smith Papyrus, in which it described early anatomical observations made by the Egyptians, most likely due to their knowledge gained from mummification. The papyrus displayed organs such as the bladder, uterus, kidneys, liver, spleen, heart, and blood vessels. Following the Egyptians were the Greeks, who began their study of anatomy around fifth century B.C. (400 B.C.) with the works of Alcmaeon and Empedocles, two Greek scientists. It was during this time that the anatomy of animals was studied and medical schools were built in cities such as Crotona, Italy and Cyrene, Africa. Alcmaeon of Croton was most likely the first person to dissect the human body for research purposes, while Empedocles was the person to first propose the idea that an ethereal substance called pneuma flowed through the blood vessels. Hippocrates was another famous person from Greece. Regarded as the Father of Medicine and one of the founders of anatomy, he was also a physician who studied anatomy and hypothesized about physiology. Hippocrates made anatomical inferences without dissection and instead through observations. He proposed the idea that diseases were not caused by supernatural forces or were punishments from the gods. The well-known Aristotle also contribu ted to the history of anatomy as he was the first to distinguish the difference between nerves and tendons and between arteries and blood vessels using knowledge gained from animal dissections. Herophilus, another anatomist, is known as one of the earliest â€Å"Fa... ...certain scientists. During this time, many medical students began to rob graves in order to obtain bodies to perform dissections on. This then led to the development of the Anatomy Act of 1832 in order to supply a sufficient amount of dead bodies to perform dissections on. The nineteenth century also experienced an expanding amount of knowledge on developmental anatomy due to the many experiments and research being done to study it. In addition, England became the main focal point for medical and anatomical research. As the years continued to pass, more advancements are being made in the field and study of anatomy based on continuing research from scientists, researchers, and doctors. With new technology, more information and a better understanding can be gained about the structure and function of organs, organ systems, and DNA among other various parts of the body.

America s High School Education System - 1388 Words

You Work or You Work America’s high school education system is riddled with apathetic and failing students who just go to school simply because they are forced to. These students are wasting millions of taxpayer dollars just to socialize and cause trouble for the other students. The average student will cost taxpayers about 10,297 dollars a year to go through public schooling. With this amount of money being spent on the millions of high school students that are in the country none of it should be wasted on a student that just does not care. Most students who are failing think school is just a waste of their time and would rather spend their energy doing something else such as putting more effort into a job or skipping school. Due†¦show more content†¦In order for a country to have a stable economy, it needs a large workforce to steadily produce economic resources for the country. On average, about 1.3 million students do not graduate high school every year. (Adobe) T hese students fail to graduate for a number of reasons, but mostly it is because of their failing grades inside of the classroom. After failing to graduate, these 1.3 million students tend to drop out of high school because they just do not care or unable to comprehend the curriculum. But what these students do not understand is that they are substantially hurting themselves and the economy. If these students were taken out of regular schooling and reassign to alternative skill based schools and on worksites; it would boost the nation’s job market rapidly and exponentially. These 1.3 million students could learn how to do blue collar manufacturing and agrarian jobs and basic white collar jobs in a fraction of the time traditional schooling requires. The schooling would not take nearly as long because students would only have to learn basic subjects such as reading, writing, math and the job skill that interests them. This method would potentially increase a spirit of entrepre neurship and small business creation within these individuals. With the nation’s current unemployment rate for teenagers
